License Your Data or Build Your Own AI Product? How to Monetize Company Data
By Andrew Smart, founder of MON$TER · About
Once business owners realize their data has value, the next question is usually: should we license it, or build our own AI product with it? Both can work. They are very different bets.
| License your data | Build your own AI product | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low: inventory, clean, review contracts | High: engineers, models, infrastructure |
| Time to revenue | Depends on buyer diligence | Usually long: build, launch, then sell |
| Risk | Deal may not close; nothing is guaranteed | Product may not find customers |
| Ownership | You keep it (non-exclusive licenses) | You keep it |
| Your focus | Stays on your core business | Shifts toward running a software product |
When licensing makes sense
If you have years of clean, de-identified operating history and no plan to become an AI company, licensing turns that history into revenue without a new product team. Published MON$TER ranges: $50K-$1M for an exclusive one-time sale, or $300K-$3M per year for a non-exclusive recurring license. See licensing vs. selling and what company data is worth.
When building makes sense
If your data is truly unique to your niche, you already have technical staff, and you want to sell a product to your own customers, building can capture more long-term value — at the cost of time and money. Be honest about whether your team wants to run a software company, with support, sales and updates, on top of the business you already have.
You don't have to pick only one
A non-exclusive license can fund your roadmap while you keep the right to use your own data. Read exclusive vs. non-exclusive licenses, then start at Business Data for a no-cost review.
