Data Licensing Agreement: The Key Terms Business Owners Should Understand
By Andrew Smart, founder of MON$TER · About
A data licensing agreement is the contract that lets a buyer use your data while you keep ownership. Before you sign, make sure you understand these terms:
- Scope: exactly which datasets, fields and time ranges are covered.
- Permitted use: for example, model training only, with no resale.
- Exclusivity: one buyer or many. See exclusive vs. non-exclusive.
- Term and renewal: one-time delivery or a recurring feed.
- Privacy: anonymization standards and a firm rule of no personal information. See PII and data licensing.
- Payment: upfront, recurring, or tied to delivery.
